Marketplace profitability analysis, order by order

Revenue shows what sold. Order Profitability shows what each order and each SKU actually left behind once commission, shipping, returns, advertising and product cost are taken out, on every channel you sell through.

Why revenue and ROAS do not answer the profit question

A marketplace order passes through several deductions before any of it becomes contribution. The marketplace takes commission. Shipping is charged. Some orders come back as returns weeks later. Advertising was paid to win the order in the first place. And the product itself had a cost.

The problem is that each of those numbers lives in a different system. Commission and shipping sit in the marketplace settlement, product cost sits in the ERP, ad spend sits in Google Ads or Meta Ads, and returns arrive after the sale has already been reported as revenue. When they are read separately, a SKU can look healthy in every single report and still lose money on every order.

As our article on why ROAS alone can mislead puts it, two products can produce the same revenue and very different contribution. Order profitability is the view that closes that gap.

What Order Profitability combines

Order Profitability reads from the same synchronized model as the rest of DataSync, so each order is evaluated against every cost that touches it:

  • Orders and selling prices from Trendyol, Hepsiburada, Amazon, N11 and Shopify, as well as IdeaSoft and Ticimax storefronts.
  • Marketplace commission and shipping charges for each channel, so the same SKU is read under each channel's own cost structure.
  • Returns and cancellations, so profit is not reported before the order has actually stayed sold.
  • Advertising spend from Google Ads and Meta Ads, so contribution is read after marketing cost, not before.
  • Product cost from the connected ERP: Logo Tiger, Netsis, Mikro or SAP Business One.
  • Stock position, so a profitable SKU that is about to run out is not treated the same as one with healthy cover.

How each of these is defined, for example which cost basis applies or how returns are counted, is agreed with your team during SYNC configuration rather than shipped as a fixed template.

One SKU, two channels, two different results

Illustrative example — the same SKU sold at the same price on two channels. Made-up round numbers, in currency units.
Line Channel A Channel B
Selling price 1,000 1,000
Marketplace commission −150 −100
Shipping −50 −80
Returns cost −40 −20
Advertising spend −100 −200
Product cost −400 −400
Contribution per order 260 200

Revenue is identical. Channel B even has the lower commission. But once shipping and the extra advertising needed to win the order are counted, Channel A leaves more behind. Neither the marketplace report nor the ad account shows this on its own; it only appears when the lines are read together at order and SKU level.

Questions it answers

  • Which SKUs lose money on which marketplace once every cost is included?
  • Which orders are profitable only until the returns arrive?
  • Where does advertising spend turn a revenue-positive product into a contribution-negative one?
  • Which channel should carry a product, given its cost structure on each one?
  • What changed in contribution this week, and which cost line drove the change?

What the output helps you decide

The point of order-level profit is not another report. It is a short list of decisions, each with an owner:

  • Push products that are profitable after all costs and have the stock to support more demand.
  • Reprice products whose contribution is too thin, and check the new price against margin and stock first with SmartPricing.
  • Reduce ad support where spend is buying revenue but not contribution.
  • Review before the next campaign any SKU whose margin would not survive a discount, using the Promotion Calculator.
  • Check the payout when the deductions on an order do not match what was expected, with Remittance.

Because SYNC AI routes intelligence by role, the e-commerce team sees the SKU and channel detail, marketing sees where spend is not paying back, and finance sees the contribution picture across channels, all from the same numbers.

How it fits into DataSync

Order Profitability is one of the DataSync add-ons, and every add-on is included in every plan: Synchronize, Accelerate and Enterprise. It runs on the same model as the nine capabilities, so the contribution figures you see here are the same ones used in pricing, promotion and marketing decisions elsewhere in the platform.

Ask it directly

With SYNC AI Analist, profitability questions can be asked in plain language, such as which Trendyol SKUs lost contribution last week and why, and the answer is scoped to the person asking.

If you want to work through the arithmetic yourself first, the free marketplace profit calculator lets you do that with your own numbers.

Frequently asked questions

What is order profitability in marketplace selling?

It is the contribution an individual order or SKU leaves behind after marketplace commission, shipping, returns, advertising spend and product cost are deducted from the selling price. It differs from revenue and from ROAS because it includes the costs those two measures leave out.

Which marketplaces and systems does Order Profitability read from?

Marketplace and storefront data comes from Trendyol, Hepsiburada, Amazon (SP-API), N11, Shopify, IdeaSoft and Ticimax. Product cost comes from a connected ERP such as Logo Tiger, Netsis or Mikro, with SAP Business One in beta. Advertising spend comes from Google Ads and Meta Ads.

Is Order Profitability a separate purchase?

No. Order Profitability is an add-on, and every DataSync add-on is included in every plan, including Synchronize, Accelerate and Enterprise.

How are product cost and returns defined?

Definitions such as the cost basis and how returns are counted are set with your team during SYNC configuration. DataSync is configured to your operation rather than shipped with fixed metric definitions.

Can I ask SYNC AI about order profitability?

Yes. SYNC AI Analist answers questions on synchronized data in plain language, and responses are scoped to each user's role, KPIs and responsibilities.
